| 2 weeks ago i had the opportunity to go on my first missions trip. our church group of 17 went to ensenada, mexico, to work with pastor francisco. we flew to san diego, rented some vans and drove to ensenada. i didnt know that we were going to be in the car that long so i only brought a couple of cds. we ended up listening to "hillsong - mighty to save" like a million times, so ive got all the songs stuck in my head. during our trip, we split up into 2 teams. the adults put insulation and sheet rock in francisco's house while the youth helped francisco with the children's vbs program. a few of us spoke spanish, and we also learned some new phrases. my spanish was really rusty, i spoke everything in the present tense! i took 4 years of spanish in high school, but its been so long that i dont remember much. anyways, we had a fun time serving with the children and learning the mexican culture.
waiting in the airport
funny thing is its a japanese restuarant but the logo looks like a chinese person
bagging beans and rice for the migrant farmers passing out food to the children at the migrant farms
francisco teaching the vbs at vista del sol
after we dug a trench for the new youth building. jesus y christian con los chinos locos!
mmmm..... manzana lift
we put on a carnival for the kids! i got to work the mini golf station, and i think the older kids took advantage of this one because it was pretty easy
most of the mbc team, pastor jerry took the pic
even after spending a week together, it was hard to make friends with others on the team well, God taught me a lot on this missions trip. i visited ensenada before as a tourist but this was my first time seeing the inner cities and poor neighborhoods. it gave me a new perspective on how i view life and made me rethink my priorities and goals. God pushed us beyond our comfort zones and we learned that even though we couldnt speak perfect spanish, we were able to share God's love with the children through our actions and attitude. we also learned that we dont have to go all the way to mexico to help those in need. there are tons of people in our own cities that are in need of help and compassion. i pray that God will continue to keep this burden for the poor on our hearts and that we can be used by him to be an blessing to those in need.
| a few weeks ago, our church had our first day camp program. and although it only lasted one week, i was exhausted everyday i got back home. who knew spending time with kids could be so draining? i dunno how the other churches do it with their 4 or 6 week day camps. but day camp was really rewarding, to see the kids excited about God and to see the high school/college students serving. here are some of the highlights:
singing fun songs with lots of hand motions
k-1 class being goofy 2nd - 3rd graders during Bible lesson
4th - 5th graders with rec leaders
we had dress up days, like fbi day
the kids won points that they used to buy things in the store
we had lots of cool crafts too
and day camp wouldnt be complete without water fights! just like last year, registration was slow and i didnt think that we would get many kids to sign up. but God was faithful and there were some new students that came. there were even a few that heard about our day camp accidentally when they came to the school to sign up for the next school year. the best part about day camp is when children trust in Jesus Christ as their Savior, and we had a handful that made that decision. im excited for next year, to see how we can improve on this years camp and reach more students. next.... mexico missions trip!
| our house is infested with spiders!!! our house is like 50 years old and has a huge tree in the front yard. so in the summertime, all the bugs find their way into our house. i think i kill an average of one spider a day. yesterday i killed 3 spiders (with gregs slipper), and found a dead one under my pillow! im getting all paranoid now, i check my sheets and all the walls to make sure there aren't any spiders before i go to sleep. finding that dead spider in my bed made me think about that gross statistic, everyone swallows an average of 4 spiders a year. ughh... i guess God is preparing me for the mexico missions trip, where pastor jerry says there are a ton of bugs. oh well, part of missions is getting out of your comfort zone right? so what better place to start than right at home? | | |
| well the playoff run is finally over. this was definitely a memorable year, the big trade for al and sjax, making the playoffs on the last day of the season, upsetting the mavs in the 1st round. even though the warriors lost to the jazz, we know which areas we need to improve on: rebounding, mental toughness, shot selection. the warriors also need to learn to lose with dignity. i felt they complained too much about fouls. dont let the refs dictate the game, just play! im afraid this series is going to give ppl the idea that the warriors are a bunch of dirty players who complain when they dont get calls their way. well, im already looking forward to next season, which figures to be an another promising year. this is kinda weird coming from a youth intern but on another note... is there such a thing as prayer courtesy? lets say youre praying with a group of 5 ppl, and there are 10 prayer requests. the normal thing would be to take 2 requests each right? but sometimes the Spirit leads to pray for more than one. what if a person is consistently known for praying a long time, like 50% of the whole prayer time, even when theyre told to take only 2 requests each? you cant just go up to them and tell them to shorten their prayers because thats not spiritual. so ive tried to keep my prayers concise, hoping they would catch my pattern. our group has been silent about the issue for awhile now, i havent actually asked the others how they feel about it. what would you do in this situation? or am i just making a big deal about nothing? | | |
